The National Police Service has rolled out wide security and traffic plans to keep the country safe during the holiday season. With more travellers on the roads, busy shopping centres, crowded holiday spots and increased movement of goods, the service says this period often presents challenges that require extra attention.

During a briefing on Thursday, the Director of Corporate Communication, Muchiri Nyaga, said the service has been working with various government teams to prepare for the holiday rush.

“As the festive period starts, we are duty-bound to inform Kenyans of the plans we have in place to ensure a peaceful and secure festive season,” he said.

Part of the strategy includes more visible patrols across all counties, with officers stationed in towns, trading areas, sports venues, prayer centres and major travel points.

Police presence will also be felt at border areas, airports and other sensitive facilities, where screening and surveillance will be stepped up. Specialist teams will operate alongside regular officers to stop crime and protect the public.

Traffic Police will be enforcing road safety rules more firmly from now through the holidays. “Strict law enforcement action will be taken against offenders, including reckless driving, drunk driving, overloading, and violations of public service vehicle regulations,” Nyaga said. Checkpoints will be placed on main roads, and drivers are being urged to keep to speed limits, service their vehicles and always use seatbelts.

The service also appealed to the public to take personal caution as they celebrate. “We urge Kenyans, residents, and visitors to celebrate responsibly and ensure we all usher in the New Year safely,” Nyaga said.

The National Police Service ended the briefing by reaffirming its promise to safeguard communities and wished the country a peaceful and joyful festive period.
